Breast Cancer in Young People
Approximately 3% of all breast cancers occur in women under the age of 35. While rare in younger women, cancers in this age group tend to have a worse prognosis.
Breast cancer is extremely rare in young women between the ages of 13 and 19.
A family history of breast cancer, genetic and environmental factors, radiation therapy involving the chest for another condition, use of birth control pills, and pregnancy are thought to be risk factors for breast cancer in young people, with varying degrees of impact.
The most important risk factor for breast cancer is age. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in women under the age of 30, and the risk of a woman developing breast cancer before the age of 30 is 0.44%.
